BodyTalk Boulevard with Kamryn Cruise

Let your body do the talking.

You already want to come. The hard part is walking in.

Saturdays • 7:30 to 9:00 PM • D-Space Academy, Poway

For the woman who almost stayed in the car

The hardest part is the parking lot.

You will sit in the car for a minute. You will check the time, and think about how easy it would be to drive home, and tell yourself you will come next Saturday instead. Almost everyone in that room has had that exact minute.

“I’m nervous. Will I actually feel okay once I’m inside?”

Yes, and sooner than you think. The nerves peak out here, not in there. The parking lot is the worst of it, and it is over the second you open the door.

Inside there is a floor, a mirror, music, and a room of women learning the same eight counts you are. Nobody is assessing you. There is nothing to keep up with, because everyone starts the same phrase at the same time. You stand where you want. You learn it in pieces. You dance it.

Some of it will land. Some of it will not, and that is the normal amount for a first Saturday.

The first Saturday is the only one with a parking lot in it. After that it is just Saturday.

Park. Breathe. Walk in. Dance.

  • 1. Pick a Saturday. First name is all we need.
  • 2. Wear anything you can move in. Sneakers count. So do the heels you never get to wear.
  • 3. Walk in at 7:30. The first one is free. Consider it a first date.

The part nobody emails about

The questions you’re not going to ask out loud.

“Do I need to be flexible? Or fit? Or twenty two?”
None of the above. There is no fitness test, no body type and no age limit for adults. Heels asks for control more than flexibility, and control is something you build over weeks, not something you are supposed to walk in with.
“I don’t want to be sexy in front of strangers.”
You won’t be. The strangers are all facing the mirror, busy with themselves. Whatever you find in your own reflection is yours to keep — and that’s the fun part.
“I don’t own heels.”
Then come in sneakers. Heels are recommended, not required, and beginners start in whatever they can move in safely. (The heels tend to happen eventually. Nobody has ever been mad about it.)
“I don’t know anyone there.”
Plenty of people come on their own rather than with a friend. There are no auditions and nobody is placed or ranked. You walk in, you learn the same phrase as everyone else, and you drive home a little smug.
“What if I’m the worst one in the room?”
Somebody is always the newest, and on your first Saturday it might be you. It matters far less in the room than it does in the car. Everyone in there is working on something of their own, and nobody is watching you, because they are watching themselves in the mirror, counting. Give it three Saturdays and you’ll be too busy watching yourself to care.

The first night

Heels. Hips. Rhythm. Presence.

This is everything on the other side of the door. Class runs 7:30 to 9:00 at D-Space Academy, Poway’s professional ballroom and Latin studio. You will work on heels technique, body awareness and musicality, and you will learn a piece of choreography set to music you actually want to dance to. Then you dance it: in a studio, in front of a mirror, with no audience.

There is floorwork, knee pads optional, and you work at your own pace. If class gets filmed for the Instagram recap and you would rather not be in it, tell Kamryn and you will not be.

  • Built for people who have never done this
  • Movement quality & body awareness
  • Musicality & rhythm
  • Confidence & presence
  • Expressive choreography
  • A little tease. A lot of control.

The room

A little nervous. A little bold. Fully in motion.

On a Saturday night this room has women who have danced for years and women who have never taken a class in their life, learning the same eight counts. Everyone is working on something, and every one of them had a first Saturday. There is always room for one more.

What you’re walking into

No auditions. No placement. No one watching to judge.

Complete beginners and dancers with years of training, in the same room, on the same floor. Plenty of people come on their own. The room is warm, the pace is kind, and everyone in it is figuring something out.

The instructor

She’ll meet you at the beginning. She won’t leave you there.

Kamryn Cruise holds a Bachelor of Arts in Dance and competes in Latin ballroom. She trains at D-Space with Dmitry Dmytrenko, works with Sarah Nolan of Brooklyn DanceSport Club LA, dances with the Play Studio Dance Team alongside Janelle Murphy, trains at Fusion Exercise NYC, and studies precision dance with Rhonda Malkin.

None of that is a standard you will be held to. It is the reason she can break a movement down far enough that it works for someone who has never done it before.

Confidence is a skill rather than a personality trait, and skills can be taught. Nobody walks in with it. It gets built on the floor, over Saturdays.

Meet Kamryn

What she’s actually teaching you

Body. Music. Art.

I

Embodiment

Where your weight is. What your balance is doing. How to move on purpose instead of hoping.

II

Musicality

When to hit, when to melt, when to wait. The point at which choreography stops feeling memorised.

III

Artistry

Your version of it. Kamryn coaches your interpretation, not a copy of hers.

Connect to the body. Feel the music. Express the art.

Getting Ready

New to heels? Perfect.

  • Heels you can move in, or sneakers
  • Something you can move in
  • Water
  • Knee pads (optional)
  • An open mind
  • No experience required

That’s the whole list. There isn’t a hidden one. Everything else is already in the room.

Everything else

The rest of it.

The questions that actually stop people are further up the page. These are the details.

What is a heels dance class?

Heels is an expressive dance style performed in heels. It draws on jazz, ballroom and Latin, and commercial music-video choreography, with roots in the cabaret and showgirl tradition. In class that means sharp footwork, strong lines, hip and body isolations, confident walks, and floorwork, set to music you actually want to dance to. It is a genuinely technical style rather than posing in heels, and that is exactly how it is taught here. No experience needed, and you are welcome to start in sneakers.

Is heels dance the same as burlesque?

No. Heels takes inspiration from the confidence and showmanship of that world, but it is not a stand-in for burlesque. Heels is a choreography class: you learn a routine, work on technique, and dance it in a studio with a mirror, with no audience. The movement itself sits much closer to jazz, ballroom, and commercial dance.

What makes BodyTalk Boulevard different from other heels classes?

Most heels classes sell the feeling. Kamryn teaches the technique that creates it. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Dance, competes in Latin ballroom, and trains in precision dance, so the choreography is built on real movement quality: how to carry your weight, control your balance, finish a line, and make difficult movement look effortless. You leave with the confidence and with dancing that holds up.

Is this an adult dance class for women?

Yes. BodyTalk Boulevard is an adult class built for women, from complete beginners to dancers with years of training. Plenty of people come on their own rather than with a friend, and the room is warm and unintimidating by design, with no auditions, no experience required, and no one watching to judge.

Do I need dance experience to take a heels class?

No. The class is beginner/intermediate and designed to help you grow from where you are.

Do I need to be flexible, fit, or a certain age or size?

No. There is no fitness test, no body type, and no age limit for adults. Heels asks for control more than flexibility, and that is something you build over weeks rather than something you need on day one. Come as you are and work at your own pace.

Where can I find an adult women’s dance class in Poway?

BodyTalk Boulevard meets Saturday evenings, 7:30 to 9:00 PM, at D-Space Academy in Poway. It is an adult heels class open to every level, and your first class is free, so you can try the room before committing to anything.

Do I need heels? What kind should I wear?

Heels are recommended but not required, and beginners are welcome to start in sneakers or any shoes they feel safe moving in. When you are ready for heels, look for a pair with ankle support, like a strap or boot, and a heel you can balance on comfortably.

What should I wear to a heels dance class?

Comfortable dancewear and heels you can move in. Knee pads are optional for floorwork, and bring water.

How much does the class cost?

Your first class is free. After that, each class is a $15 drop-in.

When are classes?

Saturday evenings, 7:30 to 9:00 PM.

Where is class located?

Classes are held at D-Space Academy, Poway’s professional ballroom and Latin dance studio, at 12140 Community Rd. Suite 200, Poway, CA 92064, in North County San Diego, an easy drive from Rancho Bernardo, Scripps Ranch, Escondido, and Mira Mesa.

Is there a heels dance class near San Diego?

Yes, BodyTalk Boulevard meets every Saturday in Poway and welcomes dancers from across San Diego County and Southern California.

How do I sign up?

Use the sign-up form right on this page, pick your Saturday, and you are in. Only your first name is required. You can also message @bodytalkboulevard on Instagram.

Do you film class footage?

Class recaps are sometimes filmed and shared on @bodytalkboulevard, and dancers love having clips of their progress. If you would rather stay off camera, just let Kamryn know.
